In the vast tapestry of martial arts, stories of awe-inspiring feats are abundant, painting Tai Chi as a spectacle of dramatic achievements. However, my personal journey with Tai Chi under the guidance of the esteemed Master Feng Zhi Qiang offers a narrative steeped not in spectacle, but in profound personal growth and wisdom. This is a story of how a master’s kindness and generosity shaped not only my practice but my very approach to life and healing.
The following article is my personal encounter with the teacher and person, Feng Zhiqiang:

My first encounter with Master Feng began indirectly in 1994, amidst my explorations of Tai Chi forms that were primarily propagated for their health benefits. My journey across various teachers and styles provided a solid foundation, yet it was with Master Feng that the deeper, more personal layers of Tai Chi began to unfold for me. Despite initial challenges in establishing contact, our paths finally converged in 1999 at a Hunyuan Tai Chi retreat near Amsterdam—a meeting that marked the beginning of a transformative seven-year mentorship.

From the outset, Master Feng’s teaching style was deeply personal. He exuded a warmth that permeated his rigorous instruction, making complex principles accessible and relatable. His ability to infuse humor and personal anecdotes into lessons helped demystify the often-intangible aspects of Tai Chi. More than just a teacher, he became a mentor and a pivotal figure in my life, guiding me through not only the physical aspects of Tai Chi but also its philosophical depths.

Master Feng’s generosity was evident in every interaction. Despite his stature as a revered master, he approached each teaching moment with a humility that was both rare and inspiring. He was generous not only with his knowledge but with his spirit, often sharing personal stories that highlighted the importance of kindness, resilience, and integrity. These stories often served as a bridge between the physical practice of Tai Chi and the cultivation of a compassionate and balanced life.

One particularly impactful narrative was during a retreat in Beijing, where Master Feng shared his early struggles and triumphs. He spoke of the challenges he faced as a young practitioner and how these hardships taught him the importance of perseverance and humility. His reflections were not merely historical recounts but lessons in overcoming adversity with grace—a theme that resonated deeply with me both as a practitioner and as a healer.

Master Feng’s influence extended into the subtle aspects of my personal and professional life. His teachings on the interconnectedness of mind, body, and spirit helped refine my approach to Chinese medicine. The principles of Hunyuan Tai Chi, which emphasize harmony and the flow of internal energy, became integral to my practice, enabling a holistic approach to healing that transcends physical ailments to address emotional and spiritual well-being.

Perhaps one of the most profound lessons I learned from Master Feng was the art of giving without expectation. This was illustrated vividly when, during one of my visits, he refused a monetary gift I offered as a token of gratitude. He explained that the true value of teaching lay in the transmission of knowledge and the growth of the student, not in material compensation. This lesson in selflessness profoundly affected my approach to both teaching and practicing medicine, emphasizing the importance of service over reward.

Master Feng’s legacy is a testament to the transformative power of Tai Chi, not just as a martial art but as a way of life. His teachings continue to inspire a new generation of practitioners through the stories and lessons he imparted. As I continue to teach and practice, I strive to embody his virtues—kindness, generosity, and a deep commitment to the well-being of others.

Reflecting on my years with Master Feng, I realize that the greatest lessons were not about mastering complex forms but about understanding the simplicity and strength of human kindness. His mentorship was a gift that transcended the boundaries of teacher and student, leaving a lasting impact on my life and work.

As I pass on the knowledge and values he instilled in me, I am reminded of his unwavering dedication to the art and his belief in the potential of each student to achieve greatness, not through accolades, but through the quiet strength of character and compassion. This is the heart of Hunyuan Tai Chi, and it is this heart that I endeavor to share with the world, one student, one patient at a time.

“Yaron Treasure This!

Hunyuan art, to most unknown, remains unseen,

inhale, exhale, firm to soft, a tranquil routine,

within the circle’s hold, understanding is found,

mastery unveils peace, worries no longer abound.”
